Atiya III Sharia Wadi el-Nil Maadi (near 'Cairo), Egypt Dear Professor Atiya: It was nice to hear from you again. I shall look forward to the receipt of the copy of the magazine in which you reviewed my HISTORY OF SYRIA. Someone sent me recently clippings from the press in Cairo showing that our friend has offered the income from the sales of 1,000 copies of his plagiarized translation to the refugees. It is very interesting indeed] We have followed with a great deal of interest the new developments in Egypt. I visited the Near East this summer but had no chance to visit you. Kuwait, to which I had never been before, claimed my chief interest. I also spent sometime in Damascus, Amman and Jerusalem. We had last week a number of the delegates from the Hear East to the U.N. for tea and dinner. Hassunah, the nev/ secretary of the Arab League, failed to show up. We have postponed action on the Atlas. We shall probably take it up in a year or so. It requires about $150,000 as subsidy, and we do not think at the present time we should ask for such a large sum while we are getting subsidies for research and teaching more closely related to our work. Warm salams to you and to your good wife. Cordially yours, Philip K. Hitti PKH:jtp |
