Show Robert M. Leavitt Dept. of English Faculty S Jacqueline A ZOO: COLLECTION OF POEMS Robert M. Leavitt, (Jacqueline Osherow) Department of English "A Zoo" is a collection of poems that are the result of three years study in poetry. I have chosen the title "A Zoo" to reflect what I have attempted to achieve through my poetry. Meditations, thoughts, and occurrences are feral things that are given a setting and a point of observation through a poem. Some ideas are more docile than others, and adapt easily to captivity. Other, less submissive topics are more difficult to subdue. Some ideas acclimate better to a more formal environment such as a sonnet or quatrains, while others are better suited for the less intrusive captivity of free verse. As a careful zookeeper, I attempt, in these poems to bring a diverse population of both the small and the large, the terrestrial and the celestial, all into the domain of verse. Through my poetry I have attempted to create an environment that preserves the grace and beauty of these ideas while maintaining the frivolity that one feels both visiting a zoo and in the enjoyment of poetry. {112} |
