I have worked in the Utah Traffic Lab at the University of Utah since July 2003. Though I do not do specific research in the field of traffic engineering, my work is an integral part of the traffic research done by Dr. Peter Martin and the other research assistants. I am the computer network administrator and information technology specialist at the Utah Traffic Lab. All of the research done in the lab requires computers and other electronic equipment. The lab currently has more than 20 computers, several printers, video conferencing equipment, and many traffic control devices. Maintaining and upgrading the current equipment is one of my main responsibilities. Finding and pur- chasing new equipment is also necessary to keep the research current. This almost always requires that I do research to find the best equipment for the least cost. I do both hardware and software upgrades on all of the computers. I maintain the computer network communication between all of the computers. This is important so that the researchers in the lab can share data and results. I maintain the user accounts and email accounts and ensure that communication via email is smooth. As a research lab, the Utah Traffic Lab collects huge amounts of data. Ensuring that this data is backed up is a very important task that is left to me. I also maintain the UTL internet web page. Basically my job is to make sure that others can do there job effectively by making sure that communication happens via email, making sure that computers are working correctly and are upgraded with the latest software, and making sure that the data can be collected and transferred from traffic control devices to computers and that that data is backed up. If I don't do my job, nobody else can do their job. |
