Show for the instrumentalists, this idea of improvisation was to complement the degree of controlled randomness found within the Max/MSP (electronic) aspects of the piece. In another section the drummer simply has an intensity graph as the only instruction for performance. A part of this process was the creation of AAax/AASP patches that would be the sources of the electronic medium of the piece. Beyond the basic functionality of the patches were the main purposes behind the use of such sources: music and sound that either complements or generates the main musical ideas while enhancing and altering the music generated by the acoustic instruments. Once this process was completed and the music was written and edited the instrumentalists began the arduous task of learning and rehearsing the piece. This is the stage where difficult obstacles set in. Since the acoustic instruments had microphones receiving the sounds with the computer in turn processing the sounds into the outbound speakers there are many issues with which to deal. Some of these issues were balance, the right microphones, the right presets within the AAax/AASP patches and the whole logistics of playing the piece from beginning to end with all the cogs (both human, acoustic and electronic) working together. It can be easily concluded that the logistical and technical aspect of this stage was the most difficult factor to try to resolve. Nevertheless, through several grueling rehearsals and late-night technical resolving sessions the piece was finally successfully performed. In conclusion, technology and music does indeed bring to the creative stage a world of unlimited possibilities. Yet, with the unlimited possibilities lies an inherent and great degree of miscalculation. Herein is the paradox of this medium of music composition and performance: the greater degree of musical and technical control-the greater chances of logistical errors. Nevertheless, the only way to gain the knowledge necessary to bring such artistic ventures onto the proscenium of modern concert music is to make continued efforts of practice and performance. Through this continuum of effort springs a new music that is fresh and palpable because technology in art is a context to which the public can more easily attach themselves. |
