Show THE MILITARY POWER ELITE Aaron Andrus (Jeffrey Kentor) Department of Sociology The purpose of our research is to understand how power is distributed in the United States, and how the distribution of this power changes over time. Specifically, we examine the linkages among political, corporate and military elites between 1960 and 2000. We define political elites as members of the executive and congressional branches of our government. Corporate elites are identified as members of the boards of directors of the 500 largest corporations | in the United States. Finally, we include generals and admirals of the US armed forces as military elites. Data are taken from United States government publications, Fortune, and Moody's Directories. We compare these three groups to identify the extent to which members of one group of elites are also members of one or both of the other groups. Our goal is to assess the degree to which the state apparatus is able to maintain its autonomy. |
