Show to the ones used to produce color maps. 2.3.4 Proposed Techniques This thesis proposes a new method of texture mapping where the surface of the object is actually perturbed to create texture. These surface perturbations can be extracted from a three dimensional model, then applied directly to the object during rendering to produce realistic texture. A surface perturbation map stores a displacement value that is used during rendering to perturb the surface of an object. To apply the perturbation consistently, the displacement is defined along the surface normal. The displacement rnay be positive, perturbing the surface away from itself, or negative, perturbing the object into itself. The result of surface perturbation techniques are objects that have changed their shape according to their texture. They no longer appear to be smooth because of correct silhouettes. Surface perturbation mapping also handles intersections between textured objects in a mathematically rigorous manner that greatly improves the realism of the borders between textured objects. |
