Show - Recent research at the IFRF with an emphasis upon the co-firing of waste materials with pulverised coal W L van de Kamp, J P Smart and P A Roberts, IFRF, IJmuiden, the Netherlands SUMMARY The paper describes the results of a series of investigations related to the improvement of combustion system design and operation, executed or in preparation by the IFRF at its Research Station in IJmuiden, the" Netherlands. The heating processes of concern include utility and industrial boilers, glass melting furnaces and cement kilns. The overall programmes are initially concerned with convential fuels such as natural gas, fired in glass tanks, or pulverised coal firing for utility boilers. However there in an emphasis in the paper upon less conventional fuels commencing with the firing of so-called biomass oils and leading towards a growing area of research, namely the development of combustion systems for the co-firing of biomass' and waste materials with pulverised coal, principally for application in power station boilers. 1. INTRODUCflON The International Flame Research Foundation is an industrially based, c0- operative research organisation situated at IJmuiden in the Netherlands. Its field of operation concerns the properties flames as used for industrial process heating, and the design of combustion systems for the production such flames. The Foundation is primarily an experimental organisation, and works typically at a so-called semi-industrial scale which results in firing rates equivalent to a total thermal input of around 2.5 MWt. The objectives are to design flames which can maintain the highest heating process efficiency, with the maintenance of pollutant emissions below levels required by legislation. More recently the question of carbon dioxide emission reduction has come to play an important role in the definition of research objecti ves. ~e IFRF is primarily an industrial co-operative, gaining support from a group of industrial and related organisations the number of which is presently approaching 300, based in 22 coWltries world~wide. This group provides the initial financial support for a basic research programme on ' combustion in turbulent diffusion flames, gives the overall technical dir~ction |
