Show MAX COWAN AUGUST 18 , 1972 have been awhile . It broke off from the other synagogue, from Montefiore, a few years before 1930. It must have been 1924 or 1925, in there somewhere. RD: Do you recall when it finally closed down? MC: It closed down, let's see, when Harry Volsky got married. He must have got married in 19- - (?) . Remember Harry Vol sky? HR: No, but I am wondering why it closed down. MC: Well, Harry Volsky got married in there, and that was the last marriage. I went to the marriage, and that is why I remember it. I would say that it closed down in about 1942 or something like that, 1940 or 1942. They sold it to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. HR: Why do you suppose there was no more need for it? MC: Well, because I think the schism healed between the members of the Synagogues. HR: I see. MC: You know they broke up because there was a little friction in the Synagogue. Probably some of those older ones who had caused it had died off. They decided that, you know, it was too expensive to run both of them. They did not really have enough membership in Shaare Tzedek. They wound up with the graveyard up there. They have the graveyard, you know, separate. They still have that. RD : You mentioned you were in the cattle business. Isn't it 4 |
