Show MAX COWAN AUGUST 18, 1972 in the paper. They took him back, and I guess they buried him in Pennsylvania. He had two nieces that lived there. But Mr. Kratke was odd. Here he had lived forty miles from Richfield, and I would say from Salina it would be another fifteen miles. That is fifty-five miles. There was a man by the name of Max Cohen from Salina for many, many years. He was a merchant there. He had a store, Max Cohen. He died and his widow left. They were there a long time, the Cohens, in Salina. I think he went in there about 1915. Anyway, being only fifty-five miles from Salina, or whatever it was, and you would think, since another Jew lived there, that he would try to find out who he was. He never heard of Max Cohen. Well, I said, "Did you ever hear of the Clarion colony, that there was a Jewish colony?" "No," he never knew that . So I says, "Did you ever know there was Hitler?" He said, "Oh, I know about that." Isn't that funny? He only lived fifty-five miles from there, see. HR: A hermit. MC: He was just like a hermit, just like a hermit. Well, then I ran into other people down there. There is a family of Clines down in Beaver. I do not know if you know about them. These Clines are old-timers there. Their family came there a long time ago. Eight Clines were cousins.
