| Abstract |
Silver (b. 1942) was the subject of seven interviews conducted by Leslie Kelen. In the first interview, Silver talks about his family background, his father's Hasidic upbringing, the pre-World War II immigration of his parents, talks about his own childhood. The next two interviews contain information on Silver's education, his seven years of Naval service (beginning in 1963), his experiences at Hebrew Union College, the spiritual responsibility involved in the rabbinate, and what it meant to go to a reform, rather than conservative or orthodox college. The remainder of the interviews focus on Silver's experiences as a rabbi and on the congregations and people he has served. Topics covered include interfaith marriages, how rabbis are placed, conflicts between reform and conservative components of the community, the "lost generation" of children veering away from their Jewish roots, his evaluation by the board of Kol Ami, the differences between being a rabbi and being a leader, and his decision to leave the congregation Kol Ami after five years. 210 pages. |

Show that--I have this only second-hand via this other rabbi--but that is the opinion that Rabbi Dreyfus was reported to have had about this congregation. We reiterated this just last Sunday, when I was talking with this other rabbi, as I say, home-grown, Salt Lake product. Hhen I came here, Rabbi Dreyfus said, "Let me tell you a bit about this community that you're going into." And he explained to me. And sure enough all the things that he spoke about were indeed true, they came true. I sort of had the feeling that with my skills I would be able to deal with these things effectively, and I didn't. Rabbi Dreyfus's opinion \vas, he said, "If anybody can do it, you can." So I get this feeling there might be that nobody can do it. LK: :fuat were the things that people attacked you about? ES: "The rabbi is cold, aloof, arrogant, uncaring,"--is that enough? That's enough. And derivations of all these. No one who's ever worked with me on any level beyond the most superficial has ever felt that way al::out me. LK: You're saying that you felt the congregation was aloof. 167 |
