Show fathan 5/12/83 pg 3 i ~ father used to like to work on a soup bone. She always had a big soup bone, and he liked to eat the grissle off that soup bone. He always did. So , we always had the soup last. Here we have it first . (laughs) We always had the soup last . My mother would usually have a bowl of soup with a big soup bone in it. My father would go on the road, and when he'd cowe back, of course, he'd be very glad to get back. He had a big strong team of horses and a dog by the na~e of Ring . He was quite an adventurous guy , hard worker, carried those bundles on his shoulders, and solicited business in the country to the settlers, and brought back hides and furs at ti~es. That's how he made a living. So, we lived together and we tolerated each other . There was no animosity. r· ;y sister, Hatti, becarre a school teacher, and she had her back roow. We had an extra room put on the back of our howe. We had a cesspool, and we've had years like this one this time when the cesspool over flowed. LK You wean when it rained a lot. NN Yes , a lot of rain. And this is the situation this year, and we hope and pray that we won'.t 7~hrough it again, because there's a big canal that goes through here on 9th south, a great big pipe, and there's one on 13th south, too, and those things have over flown. So, we hope that we don't go through that again. LK In what language did your parents speak to you? NN Uh, in Jewish, mostly. They spoke to us in Jewish, and we spoke back in English to them. I never did get to learn Jewish,very ~uch of it. Oh, I didn't like it, that's all. That's why. I was supposed to know ~ore than my parents, you know. Naturally, I was the educated one, the eldest son, and to me it wasn't important. I knew English. I was very good in English and music, in my time, in w.y school years. But , they spoke to us in Yiddish, mostly, and to . ) ., . . the people that cawe to the home. Of course, the·; kne-w- English, and they would speak to us in English when necessary. LK How did your parents get together with the other people from the area here? In what ways did they get together? NN We were instrumental in bringing many people through here, particular· ly our own relations, and they settled near us in the blocks around 9th south and West Te~ple. |
