Show Betsy Bamberger Lesser 1-27-83 (interviewed by Leslie Kelen) L: Let's start with your full n ame, inc luding ma i den n ame . BL: O.K., my name is Betsy Bamberger Lesser. L: And date you were born? BL: February 20, 1922 . L: Place of your birth? BL: Salt Lake City, ~h, the Holy Cross Hospital. L: Names of your parents? BL: My parents were Julian MQss Bamberger. My mother was Edith Hahlo Bamberger. Her father came frornHannover, Germany. She carne from quite a distinguished family. I have the--a copy of the family tree and it goes back quite a few generations. Actua lly, oh, I think certainly, many centuries. Actually, I have a distant cousin who has really done some research on our family and they were quite distinguished people. See, the background of my-- are you interested in their background because I-- both families? [yes] Yes, I happen to have done a little bit of research, not much, on my family. But, my mother's father was, as I said, born in Hannover. His name was William Henry Hahlo. And my grandmother was Julia Fisher Hahlo and she was born in Breslau. And then my paternal family: my grandfather was Simon Bamberger, who was the jovernor. And he was born in a little town called Eberstadt, which is a suburb of Darmstadt and I've been there, to Darmstadt, to the little county reg1· st~ear.,r or to t h e reg·1 sft(JA~.., over t h ere, and I got a copy of his birth cer-tificate, which I left with E~erett Cooley , yes, he has that. My grandmother came from Stuttgart. And her name was Maas, maiden name. Ida Maas. And her father--she was born there and carne as a very small child. I think about two years old, to Cincinatti. Her father's name was Jacob Maas, I believe and he was quite a well known educator who was involved with Isaac Meyer Weissin the reform movement in Cincinatti. And I know something about their siblings, a little bit. Ah, my grandmother had a sister ~I'll have {o.rri-(. (Ytl./~uYT to think about her name - her name wasAR~sahoff. She married~ Ra•sa-hoff. All of a sudden, her name's escaped me ... but I have all those different records with Everett Cooley. He has them all. And of course, you probably have a record of my grandfather's family. Well, all the information I have, I left copies with Everet Cooley. L: Well, what I would like to ask you is some of your personal impressions-- you were very young when your grandfather was governor. No, you weren't born then. BL I wasn't born then.
