Show m: interview with Hisaye Tsutsui 6/11/84 6 This -we cut, measure, weigh and bundle a~g to size and steam then. Everyone in the family helped. We also raised "rakkyo" (a relish- pickled scallions), beautiful ones,. just for hone use. We used dark brown sugar to sweeten them and with vinegar and salt. I tried to make rakkyo here but couldn' t match the ones we made in Japan. In Japan, as you saw in the picture, the farm lands are built like terraced steps so in one of the comer we raised rakkyo. They grew abundantly. We used to make oshuyu (soy sauce) and amiso ( b:xm paste) • SF Did you miss the land when you cane here? It was quite different from Japan? HI' I thought it was huge, wide, expansive. I felt like I went to T~s. Houston is not big like New York, but when I was in New York, tall buildings line the street one after another and down in the street, you feel like your• re in the dark. When we· toured the city I f~lt like I was in New York. When I went to Los Angeles and Hawaii, there are many tall buildlings but not like in New York where it• s lined one after another, the whole street so campact. As I crossed the Pacific Ocean I thought how far and wide then, I landed in San Francisco and the streets went this way and that, then when I went to the park, rcrle on the street car SF How arout the train ride? HI' Let's see, it was my first trip on a train. I never rcrle a train in Japan. SF Did you find it quite different, the work you did in Japan and here in Payson? HI' Yes, it's entirely different. When the tine to thin sugar l:::eets, I -went out to do t.h.inn.ing. other work is done by horses, and I also pulled out weeds. What I rerneml:er is when I was pregnant with Tan, I went out to get some vegetables. After I dugged out the vegetables, my husband and I rcrle on a horse. I never rode on a horse before and when I took the rein the horse l:egan trotting away and wouldn't listen to me so I got thrown off. Fortunately, it was by the fence where the weeds were growing thick so I wasn't injured. I was really scared. I wasn• t too far along. |
