Show om interview with Hisaye Tsutsui 5/29/84 8 SF Have Mr Tsutsui ever been tack to Japan? HI' No, he never went ba.ck, neither have I. In 1980 my children went, the couple, to Japan. I wanted to go but I was not feeling too well then. It's a worry you know. If I went I would have to go sightseeing all aver. I dcm' t want just to stay in the cotmtry. I wondered if I could keep up with the yom1g people. My health wasn't too good so even though I planned to go, I decided not to. That was the end, I have no desire to go now. After my friend's 88th birthday, my friend's daughter gave her money to go to Japan. She said it was so hot she couldn't sleep at nights and after she retumed she didn't feel well and had a terrible time. Oh, when I left my place to corre to Airerica, I wa.J..ked through the tunnel (no train then) to where I took a ri ve.r b:>at to a place called "Io", then fran there I took an. electric train, tram, to Kochi city. Fran Kochi, I took a l::oat to Ko:be, then on a steamline to America. SF Did you have a chance to see Ko:be? HT No, I had to go to the hospital for treat.nent for hookwonn (junishicho). Had to stay a.l:x:>ut a week there. SF What you have seen of Japan is that island of yours and Kochi and Ko:be? Any travel? Hr Yes, I went to Kochi once before. I didn't sightsee Ko~ at all. SF What did you bring with you? Just kirrono? Hr As to baggage, I had one blanket which was given to ne to ~ used on the b:>at and my clothing in the kori (woven basket, trunk). We slept on bunk beds (kaikodane, cocoon shelves). I slept on the top bunk bed. I don't know haw many in the roan but inside of the l:xJat is entirely different. It's cramperl, small, narrow with blmk beds, a place that looked like a kitchen; it was a confused mess. Sane people got seasick and I had a cold so it wasn• t very pleasant. When I arrived in San Francisco at the Inrnigration Office, we were fed dry, separated rice (like the Chinese rice) and sene roiled fish but the rice was |
