Show "The Oy-Stars" (Savannah Agardy, poster star from our Founders Title Company Folk & Bluegrass Festival was in the 1st place band, of course). Winners of the Flat-pick Guitar Contests were: 1st-Jim Nations, Rock Springs, WY; 2nd - Allan Shipley, Rock Springs, WY; and, 3rd Marty Boyer, Bridger Valley, WY. Winners of the Finger Style Contest were: 1st - Noberto Agvado, Columbia, MO (via Spain); 2nd - Guy Benson, SLC, UT; and, 3rd- Keith Taylor, SLC, UT (yippee - Guy and Keith!) Highlights for Janet and I were hanging with our old friend Robin Kessinger (2-tirne National Flatpick Champion); Jamming with old and new friends under the stars into the cool early dawn hours; The BBQ and gun show at Matt Krall's horne (former Wyoming state flatpick champion and my great buddy from kindergarten forward); the Peasall Sisters (Grarnrny and CMA Winners from the movie 0 Brother Where Art Thou?); and, not getting arrested or even involved in a "hotpursuit" this year. RockyGrass Bluegrass Festival & the RockyGrass Music Academy, Lyons, Colorado, July 24-July 30, 2006 Last year, I participated in the RockyGrass Academy and I built a very cool A-model mandolin. This year we did not get to attend the sold-out RockyGrass (3,500 capacity); but, the report from Festivarians Jim "Bowser" Wilcox, Ruth Naccarato and Ken Sager were "sketchy" so you know they must have had an outstanding time! Some of the instructors at the week-long RockyGrass Academy (held the week before RockyGrass) included Tim Stafford, Sandy Munro, Roland White, Tony Trischka, Richard Green, Darol Anger and Rob Ickes. Bands in residence were Blue Highway and the Infamous Stringdusters. Kid's Academy was coordinated by Barefoot Bluegrass Band. The Luthier School was headed by the amazing Michael Hornick of Shanti Guitars and assisted by Dan Roberts (Santa Cruz Guitars) and Bobby Wintringham (San Juan Mandolins). The Rocky Grass Instrument Contests were well attended and the multi day Band Scramble was a big success. One of the cool things about this particular band scramble is that 15- bands are made up of Academy Musicians and they are formed early in the week, so the bands have lots of time to hone a good set, rather than the usual 1-hour total practice time. At the RockyGrass Festival (Bluegrass.com) featured bluegrass legends Earl Scruggs (what a great show by the 82-year old pioneer), Roland White, Peter Rowan and Richard Green, defined the bluegrass style as former members of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys. Newgrass pioneers Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Tony Rice, Tony Trischka and Darol Anger continue to push traditional bluegrass in new directions. Songwriters Steve Earle, Darrell Scott and Tim O'Brien continue to expand the bluegrass songbook. Blue Highway, Mountain Hart, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Wilders, Uncle Earl, and the Stringdusters, and the amazing Bryan Sutton rounded out the three day show. As a special treat, Tony Rice and Jerry Douglas performed the seminal See "Spoons", page 14 LOCAL ~USIC Fine Handcrafted Acoustic Guitars Bourgeois Breedlove Everett Gallagher Goodall Larrivee Pederson Santa Cruz Thomps<)n Webber Used Martin & Taylor Guirars etc. An amazing collection of great guitars.
