Show Saturn Return New Cosy Sheridan release shines Saturn Return marks several major steps in Cosy Sheridan's career and life. This third release on Waterbug label is another stellar collection of songwriting, again showing a mastery of the craft that was so evident in her previous albums, Quietly Led and Late Bloomer. The title refers to that astrological event in everyone's life that occurs around age 30, when Saturn's orbit around the sun (which, as Carl Sagan taught us all, takes 29.5 years) returns to the relative orbital position it occupied at your birth. This infamous age often marks many changes and upheaval in people's lives and hence, folks are often cautioned about what may transpire during their "Saturn Return." "I don't necessarily buy into all that," she says, ''but, artistically, it's very beautiful." Sheridan marks her own Saturn Return with a move from her native New Hampshire to a new home in Moab, Utah. Welcome to the West, Cosy. Her new album is a collection that is, at turns, thoughtful, wry, humorous, rousing. Bound to be dubbed by critics as an "Introspective work" (with a capital I), such a description will miss the depth and beauty of Sheridan's talent. While Broken Place, Perfect and Late Night Love Talk are definitely views of the world through the writer's emotional eye, there is no navel-contemplating or whining going on here. Sheridan's songs are decidedly outward-looking, though their point of origin clearly comes from a deep and personal well. This ability to look outward gives Sheridan a universal voice that prompts the listener to respond, almost involuntarily, yes, I've been there; that's how it felt. "If there is a thread to my songs, it might be to see life as truthfully, as plainly as possible, without illusions," she said. "Trouble is, until you have your illusions shattered, you don't really know they're illusions. Sheridan also skillfully avoids the temptation some modem songwriters fall prey to: the "woe-is-me-life-on-the-road-isso- hard" song (Hell, many of us would The new album on WATERBUG RECORDS SATURN RETURN COSY SHERIDAN Available locally at Smokey's Records & Local Music Also available through Waterbug Records (800) 466-0234, Visa & M.C. accepted 14 Intermountain Acoustic Musician, October 1994 cheerfully give the middle toe of either foot to trade our problems for those problems ... ) Spending 80 percent of the year traveling does greatly influence Sheridan. (Indeed, she quite literally unpacked on her new Moab living room floor, returned the trusty U-Haul trailer, then was off to tour again, currently in the midwest. .. back home for a few days, then out again for several hectic weeks in New England prior to Thanksgiving.) Yet again, she presents her road experience with uncommon vision, accessible to all, in earphones and Airplanes; or with her unique comic talents in Roadfood. Even when dealing with the intense personal disappointment contained in Carry Me Off The Field, she never preaches. Sheridan's unusual and delightful hand with The Love Song is like a cool evening breeze after too many hot days ... relief. She handles this most compelling (and abused) subject of the popular song in Me and My Father and Blue Angels, with a unique, refreshing approach in both cuts. These are visions colored with the richness of her experience, but offered to the listener as an equal--Cosy is one of us. She combines tenderness and vulnerability with a toughness and confidence that is irresistable. In addition, there's the quiet strength of My Good Companion; Jerry Short's touching reminiscence, Ol' 2-Lane; and the hilarious Turboyeast (a truly cracked, truly inspired examination of an exclusively feminine malady ... which is really better suited to live-performance, but Cosy's fans would howl if it wasn't included ... Watch the audience during this song the next time you see Cosy live!). The folk-gospel Walk Into Heaven marches this collection to a close, and if you can play this cut three times through without the urge to stand up and sing the chorus ... well ... ain't no hope for ya. -DE Rick's Cycle Parts 2224 South 600 East Salt Lake City, Utah 84106 Used motorcycle parts Rick Martinez 485-0156 |
