Show David Norton sets classical -concert Oct. 15 Making the folk music of five centurtes accessible is his repertoire and mission David Norton, one of Utah's most noted classical guitarists, will present a solo concert on Saturday, October 15, 7:30p.m., at Day-Murray Music, 4914 S. State Street, Salt Lake City. The program, sponsored by the Utah Classical Guitar Society and lAMA, will consist of popular and lesser-known works from the Spanish & South American repertoires. A special highlight will be works by the Paraguayan virtuoso, Agustin Barrios, as this year commemorates the 50th anniversary of his death. Norton describes himself as "a folk guitarist, who happens to play the folk music of five centuries!" A native of California, his early studies on the instrument were with Thomas Runyan, a prominent L.A. studio guitarist. Norton's formal instruction was completed at California State University at Northridge, under the combined direction of Ronald Purcell (early music & Segovian repertoire) and Richard Stover (Latin American styles and the legacy of Agustin Barrios). Along the way, Norton performed in master-classes taught by many of the world's leading classical guitarists and lutenists, including Alice Artzt, Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Vladimir Mikulka, Paul O'Dette, Neil Smith, David Tanenbaum, and Narciso Yepes. An active member of the acoustic music community, Norton has served on the Board of Directors for the American Guitar Society (1982-86), and the California Harp, Lute, & Guitar Association (1988-1991). He was National Vice President of the Guitar Foundation of America from 1988 to 1990, and in that capacity directed the GFA's 1990 International Guitar Festival. He is also the president & program director for the UCGS. Norton is vice president of the lAMA, and since 1991 has written for Intermountain Acoustic Musician, "Classical Corner," a column noted for its unprecentious, informative and amusing nature. David is presumably rehearsing diligently for the upcoming performance, and as such, his column is forgivably absent this issue. Admission to the concert is $8; or $5 for students & seniors. Tickets are available at Acoustic Music, Local Music, Intermountain Guitar & Banjo, Smokey's Records, and DayMurray Music.
