Show Classical Corner . .. by David Norton Steve Lyman and friends in concert (Note: Originally, this month's column was going to be dedicated to the lute music of John Dowland. That column will appear when History & Repertoire resumes in March.) - On Tuesday, JanuaryJ9, the Utah Classical Guitar Society will present ari. evening of chamber music. The featured soloist is Steve Lyman, well known to Wasatch Front readers as one of the preeminent classical guitar players in the state. The program commences with Steves performance of Lute Suite #1 by Johann Sebastian Bach. This is the earliest of the four lute suites, and was composed around 1717 in Cothen. This_ will be followed by the Fantasia para un Gentilhombre (Fantasy for a Gentleman), by the contemporary Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo. Originally ~cored for guitar and small orchestra, Lyman will be joined for this in a duo setting with harpsichordist Ricklin Nobis. The gentleman referred to in the title actually has a dual reference. It is dedicated first to the Spanish guitarist and theologian Gaspar Sanz (1640- 1710), whose music forms the basis for Rodrigo's harmonic fantasies, and secondly to Andres Segovia, who premiered the work in 1954. Lyman played the Fantasia in October with an orchestra in St. George, and by special request of his local fans is offering thi~ alternative version. After the intermission, Steve will be joined by his wife, Jane, for Rodrigo's Serenade to the Dawn, scored for flute and guitar. By definition a smaller work than the concerto, it is no less demanding on the technical facility of both artists. The concert will close with the Concerto in A Major, Op. 30, by the Italian guitarist-composer, Mauro Giuliani. This was the first significant guitar concerto ever composed, although other smaller efforts had preceded it through the centuries. Giuliani was highly respected in the musical circles surrounding Vienna-in the early 19th century, and in fact played cello at the first performance of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony. For this performance, Steve Lyman will be assisted by violinists, Kelly Parkinson and Shannon Hanks, violist, Leslie Blackburn-Harlow, and cellist, Ellen Bridger. The concert will be held at the Social Work Auditorium, University of Utah. . Curtain time is 8 p.m. Classes are held on Tuesday, so arrive early to hunt down a parking place. Admission is $10 general, $9 students/seniors, and $8 for UCGS members. The UCGS and lAMA are working together to establish a dual . membership category so that lAMA members who are not UCGS members can enjoy ticket discounts as well. February Preview: This month will mark the centennial of the birth of - Andres Segovia, and in commemoration there are two important concerts being presented.
