Show IN COURSE O F PREPARATION . · REA.DY FOR PRESS ABOUT JULY 17, 1900. Souo¢nir or tb¢ national 'R¢J)Ubli(aU [¢agll¢ BY . "ST. PAUL'S LEADING N EWSP-APEB. " The edition will embrace the Political Philosophy, the Personalities and Portraitures of the Prominent Delegates to t he National Republican League and of Minnesota's Men of Public Affairs. ( 7/ze National Republ£can LeaJ[ue will meet in St. Paul, Yuly I 7, I900, and the Dispatch will issue this edition in the interest of and with the indorsement of the National and State organizations. ) The St. Paul Dispatch b elie~es that every citizen of the United Sta tes sh ould be a politician, amd believes too, that every politician should ex ert every effort to advance good citizenship, wise legislation and thorough pa triotism. The Na tional Republica n League promulgates such ideas for the guida nce of the young voters of the nation; it is a pa rty of h eroic men ; it studies with eagerness and the spirit of emulation the lives of its great statesmen and military chieftains. The Na tiona l Republican League first points out to the young voter the principles of the Republican Party, and then to the h eroic fi gures of its past a nd present. Minnesota has been given a work to do in this campaign th a t should more than !'lver prove the effi ci ency of its loyal and faithful political pilots, and th en, when the ba ttle ends on the night of the 6th of No v em~ er 1900, the leaders of the Na tion will gladly say, "well d ou e. ,, THE NATIONAL REPUBLICAN LEAGUE IS 'l'HE ST'RONGEST AMERICAN POLITICAL ORGANIZATION, the standing a rmy of the Republican Party, a nd it is conceded that the influence of the convention in St. Pa ul will be fa r-reaching and effective, and tha t the Republicanism of Minnesota will be roused and inspired to greater efl'ort and more enthusiastic loya lty. IN VIEW OF THE ABOVE FACl'S AND OBJEC'l'S MORE FULLY OUTLINED BELOW, ANO AS A GREETING TO TH.E NATIONAL REPUBLICAN LEAGUE, "The St. Paul Dispatch" will pu blish a specia l edition containing au exten sive write-up of the League. a nd a thorough exposition of t he plans and purposes of same, and in presenting the edition, the ma nagement deems it a dvisable to sta te in words that ca nnot be mi ~ und e r s tood , just what its purpose, mission and scope are. The idea is to commemorate the Work a nd the Workers of Minneso ta and of the Nationa l Republican League- in this, "The Second B11ttle"- to publi sh a History of American Poli tical Pa rties and an Historical and Biographil'a l Review of the Politics and Public People of :Minnesota . The edition will serve as an admirable Greeting and Souvenir of t he National Republican. More th a u a ll, however, it will be preserved for years to come as a monument to the men of mind who will a ctively pa1:ticipate in this-the last-but rea lly most sigrii fican t campaign of the 19th Century. " Lux et V eritas." "These a re thy maker s," truthfully Equity might say to the people, when dispensing a share of tardy jmtice and reward to Minne::> ota's worker s, and it is with this 5pirit of apprecia tion that the Dispatch will embody in this edition the Political History of Imperia l Minnesota, and in connection therewith will p resent a limited number of cha racter sketches and half-tone portraits of the p rominent ma kers thereof. ' The Nineteenth Century has been a period of great a ctivity and of hitherto unpa relled achievements th a t h a ve been ma nife.s ted especially in Minnesota, by the great progress ma de in every line of human effort. And now that this wonderful era is drawing to a d ose, of which the present campaign will make a dramatic climax, the time is ripe (before the passage of years wears off the sharpness of impressions) to collect and perpetuate the names a nd deeds of th ose 'Yho merit commemoration in this va luable Sou venir of the last Presid entia l campa ign of the 19th Century and of its loyal participants- an edition that will proclaim to the world the poli tical destiny of Minnesota and of the United States. In the list of special contributors to the edition specia l mention will be made of those who h ave been of a ssistance to t he Dispa tch in making it a ccura te and complete ; and all a re ea rnes tly r equested to give their courteous aid and co-operation by sending us their n ames a nd such other information a s they can, rega rding every politician of any prominence whatever, which , if for any reason the editors cannot accept, will be treated as sacred . Pride which crowns honorable attainments is not only pardonable, .but legitimate; and there is no just reason why the world sh ould n ot know the steps that l ed to success. The idea ofthe Dispatch is to present facts only- fulsome eulog y is to be blue-pencilled , and the biogra phies will represent the su b-jects as they are, and n ot as a careless and in competent narator thinks they sh ould be. · No ma terhtl '~ ill be printed which does not carry with it the approval of the subject which is portrayed. 'fosum up in a senten ce the whole design with Teference to biographies, this migh t be said: "When ever a m<tn, by his industr y, en ergy or cleverness, becomes pu blic property, he d esires to h a ve a proper representation of the fu,cts of his life, to gratify the curiosity of the people. Nine times ou t of ten the life-history of th ese men , as printed , is compiled by irr~s p on sibl e h ands and gathered from unreliabl e sources. 'l'h'is is inevitable in the burry tha t a ttends the day-to-day chronicl e. Such excuses a re n ot t o be found by the publish ers of this historical and biographica l work. Every word in the edition will be weigh ed , not only by the writer, but by the subject of the biography, and, therefore, will bear a cachet a uthoritative, and will be (almos t) a utobiog raphical. As an h h;torical work, this edition will o ~cupy an unique position. For, instead of closiug a ma n 's career at t he date on which th is edition will be issued , the purpose of its projectors is to carry a long the events of his life and bring them d ow'n to the latest moment ; thus a complete record will be in the hands of the Dispatch Biographical Editor for future use, if n eed ed or d es ired. · The edition will be in every way a ccura t e, concise and complete, and the time set for p ublication is especia lly a ppropria te a nd a ns ·picious, at the close of the 19th Century , and standing on the th reshold of the 20th Century. It is hoped tha t all will be su fficiently a live to the importance of su ch a work, and the lasting ben efit to be der ived by being represented in su ch an edition of the Dispatch. All a r e admonish ed n ot to witbl}old, through motives of fa lse modesty or pride, the iqformation required ; and those persons en titled to representation should, through themselves or their fr iends, &ee tha t their names a re sent in and all facts correctly repor ted, bearing in mind that without such a record the most illu strious names woul d be absent, and their posterity d eprived of the gra t ification and advan tage'of reference to their honorable a ncest ry-who pa rticipated in this Century Campaign. TO INSURE REPRESEN'l'ATION, MA'l'ERIAL SHOULD BE SENT IN AT ONCE. TTse only the blank inclosed herewith for sending data and informa tion . Address all communications to THE ST. PAUL DISPATCH, THE ST. PAUL DISPATCH:- St. Paul, Minn. The plan outlined by you in regard to the NATIONAL REPUBLICAN LEAGUE SOUVENIR, to .contain a write-up of the organization and an exposition of the pla ns a nd p u rposes of same, is a good one, and taken in connection with the high standing of the Dispatch, every assurailCe is given that the effo rt will be a success and will certainly result in great ben efit to the State and Nationa l organization. I would like much to see a complet e and thorougly impartial r ecord of those who have done so much for the public welfa re of the U. S., and for the Commonwealth of Minnesota . The idea is strongly commendable from an historical standpoint; embracing, as it will, the Political Philosoph y, th~ Persona lities and Portraitures of the Nationa l and State oi'ficers of the League and of prominent members thereof. I most heartil y endorse the enterprise, fully realizing that su ch an edition gotten out by the DISPATCH will be very interes ting to members of the League and to the public gen erally, and will most certainly tend to awaken inter est in the orga nization throu ghou t the Northwes t. Trusting th a t your lauda ble project will receive the support of the member3 of the League and of Men of Public Affairs of Minnesota , which it dema nds, I am Yours resp ectfully, -""~"'l<lil<!!<f""!!))!i!"!ll~~~!l!ll'I'OifP'~~-~-~~Iiliiill~~~~~ · ~, """':~ ·iii~ .. ; D~ H.
