William Terry, un photo-graphe americain de mondiale renomm£e et faisant partie de la mission chargee par la Bibliotheque du Congres des Etats- Unis de photographier les pre-cieux manuscrits du Couvent Sainte-Catherine (Sinai), est arrive recemment en Egypte. Cette mission comprend par-mi ses membres trois eminents orientalistes et deux autres mai-tres- photographes. La Faculte des Lettres de FU-niversite Farouk ler collaborera avec elie par le truchement de Abdel-Hamid El-Abadi bey et le Dr Aziz Sourial Attia. respec-tivement doyen et vice-doyen. A titre documentaire, rappelons ei nos lecteurs que le Couvent Sainte-Catherine a £t6 fond£ en 545 de notre ere, sous le regne de l'empereur Justinien. II possede une importante collection de manuscrits dont certains remontent au d6but de la chr£tiente\ comme par exemple celui de 1'Evangile syriaque qui date du He siecle. Ce manuscrit est en peau de gazelle d'une rare finesse. Tous ces documents qui constituent un tresor inestimable, sont r^diges en neuf lan-gues dont le grec, le copte, le syriaque, le latin, l'arabe, le russe. le slave et 1'hebreu, et constituent la meilleure source d'information sur la vie au Mo-yen- Age. C'est grace a eux qu'on a pu gtablir que l'enseignement scien-tifique et religieux a cette epo-que eiait tres developpe. Apres 1040, le Dr Aziz Sourial Attia qui est 6galement titulaire de la chaire d'Histoire Medievale de notre Faculte des Lettres, de- ' couvrit lors d'une visite au Couvent Sainte-Catherine des ' manuscrits jusque-la inconnus 1 et qui lui permirent d'apprendre • que cet enseignement portait . aussi sur les questions islami-qvies. Ces documents. sont constitu£s par des « firmans » ou decrets emanant des Khalifes et qui s'e-chelonnent depuis la formation de 1'Etat Islamique au Vile siecle jusqu'a la fin du regne des Sultans. L'£minent savant de-cela parmi eux quelques-uns qui datent des epoques fatimite et mamelouke. Jusqu'a tres recemment encore, ces manuscrits 6taient pratiquement inaccessibles aux photographes.
