Show PRINCETON UNIVERSITY PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY Defartment of Art and Archaeology January 6 , 1 9o0 Professor Aziz S. Atiya, Center for Language and Literature Studies, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Aziz: I hope that you and Lola and the children had a very pleasant Christmas which I suppose you celebrated according to our Western calendar. (I am not sure what the difference of the Coptic and Western is in this respect.) In the meantime, Mr. Rice will have written to you with regard to lending your icon of St. Catherine, and I hasten to add to his plea my personal thanks for your generosity. Needless to say, the lending of the Icon will not only greatly enhance the Importance of the exhibition, but also means very much to me personally. You already jinow better than anyone else how much energy I have and will devote to the study of icons. I only wish that you might have the chance to come East between February and. April to see this exhibition. In the meantime, George sent me a copy of a letter written to you and in which he mentioned that he had sent to you a copy of a letter to Archbishop Porphyrios. This letter was sent without my having seen it beforehand and, when I met George afterwards, I,could not help expressing some uneasiness because I was*^sure that It was wise to send a full statement of our finances to the Archbishop and the Egyptian authorities. However I may be wrong in this and it would greatly ease my mind if I could have your frank reaction to this, which I naturally would consider a confidential *-££eHrrA^AOM^, % tfry I am very happy that I can put into the mail another little product of my Sinai studies. It will be no surprise to you since I had discussed the problems and actually gotten your help. • With my most affectionate greetings to you and the whole family in which Josepha joins me, I remain, Very cordially yours, ^2^>^U\ 4*A $**Ah, c |
