Show / . -*! y\ Paris, 22 January 1953 Dear Dr. & Mrs. Atiya, Greetings & best wishes from Paris! - And thank you very much for your Christmas greeting, which has just been forwarded to me here from D. 0. I am very happy to hear from you again - have thought about you many times since we parted. Ho you know as I write this, I am looking at the ancient little scarab you so kindly sent to me from New Y-rk prior to your departure. 1 value it very highly - have worn it on my bracelet ever since. It reminds me of you very often - and of those days at the Library - which seem only like yesterday - yet it is just about two years since we were all together in 'Vashington. How many changes seem to have taken place for us both during those years! I have wondered sometimes whether my note of thanks to you for your thoughtfulness in sending me the scarab (l£G0 B.C. - you can imagine how staggering such a date is for an American!) nad for all your courtesy and kindness, light not have gone astray. I cannot remember just now to which address I sent it - but I do remember that you were traveling in Europe for some months before returning to Egypt. " 1 'n0Pe that was a pleasant time for you both. I thought of you, too, with much sympathy during those very black and unfortunate days that descended upon your country • So I am very glad to hear from you again.1 - I hope that you, and yours, are well and happy - and that the New Year may bring to you the desire nearest your heart. Now for me - I remained on at the Library (music Division) for several months after your departure. I did receive several offers of good and permanent positions in the Library. However, I worked only through the Summer &-. Fall as I was taking some work at the University and after that felt the need of a rest before assuming a permanent engagement. I came to Europe in October (four or five months after you sailed) to spend my vacation. Wonderful trip on the ^ueen Elizabeth. 1 planned on being in Europe for only two or three months - and I'm still here - over a year nowJ I know Europe rather well - having traveled here before. I have many friends here - so there was much to k ep me occupied - and the time flew by (my money, tool). 1 was m:king ready for my return hourney when I .a. offered a good position here in Paris - through the interest of my friends. I took the job on an indefinite basis & have been here ever since. Ours is a liaison detachment, Army, whose function is to coordinate the activities between SHAPE (General Eisenhower's - now General Ridgway's headquarters), Germany and '^sshingtorx, D. G. It is an extremely interesting spot. I work as administrative secretary to the commanding officer. - I love being in Paris and find it a very difficult place |
