Show UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY January 28,1940 Dr.A.ziz 8.Atiya 9 Sh.el Madrassah el-Tewfikieh Shoubra Cairo, Egypt Dear Dr Atiya:- Although I have never had the pleasure of meeting you personally, our common interest in the crusades, and the friendly feeling a person has towards an author who has written two books which hrve given him an opportunity to write reviews which he really enjoyed doing, causes me to write you on behalf of our American committee on the History of the Crusades, which we are planing here. The enclosed prospectus will show you whht we plan. You will note that we have taken the liberty of placing your name after a couple of chapters in parentheses. (Please pardon the misspelling, it was the mistake of the typist who cut the stencil). We all felt that you were the person best equipped to write the chapters on the Crusade attempts and the Baxubian crusades, and I was elected to write you to ask if you would be willing to cooperate with us. The work is of course the labor of love; we can expect no financial return from such a work; indeed we are having some difficulty in financing the publication. We plan a work on the general scale of the Cambridge Histories and hope that we can bring out a really authoritative history of the crusades. For that reason we are seeking for each chapter the man who is recognized as the best authority thereon. This naturally meant you for the later crusade movements. Palmer Throop of Michigan is working in the same field as yourself, but is concerned wholly with the propaganda and the European aspects of the problem. Between the two of you we would hope the field could be well covered. If you would be willing to collaborate we would be delighted. Can you let me -now at your earliest convenience whether you feel you could come in with us ? Perhaps you can suggest some other chapters which we have omitted; we would welcome any such suggestions. Also if you know of anyone working in the field whose name we do not have on our prospectus (with the exception of M Grousset whom we deliberately passed over) we would appreciate the information. I have just written Dr Ziada of Cairo asking his collaboration on the Mameluke chapters. Dr Hitti undertook to get the Arabic chapters done either through other scholars or himself. In the same way i signed for several foapters which I will do unless, as I hope',' I can find better authorities who will do them. Any suggestions you might care to make will be most gratefully received. I hope that the war has not interfered materially with your researches. We realize that you cannot give your studies the same attention you could under normal conditions, but hope that you can find the opportunity to write these chapters by the time they are due- December 1945. Hoping to hear from you that we can look forward to your collaboration Very sincerelyyours, sincere jv yoi^s, |
