Show UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF NEAR EASTERN STUDIES ANN ARBOR. MICH. April 22, 1955 Professor Aziz S. Atiya 11+ Sharia Wadi el-Nil Maadi, Egypt Dear Professor Atiya: You have not heard from me for some time only because I have been involved in quite a discussion with the University and government authorities as well as with the Mediaeval Academy in an effort to insure you an adequate income during your stay in America. The picture has now become clarified considerably and I feel that I must tell you of the results of my inquiries, although by doing so, I must reveal something which I had hoped would be revealed to you not by myself but by the University administration, The University is so happy that it will have as distinguished a scholar as yourself on campus next year that, of its own volition, it has made available a #2000 grant over and above the grant made to you by the Academy. Unfortunately, however, the revision of the United States Income Tax Laws last year will not permit you to receive as tax free the total amount as indicated above. Only the sum of 1300 a month is tax exempt^ according to these latest tax laws. Thus, your remuneration for the year may be indicated as follows: Total Salary ($6000 from the Mediaeval Academy and #2000 from the University) $8000 Plus #1000 travel grant also from the Academy and fully tax exempt. Your tax exemption is §3^00 for the full year. You must pay tax on ^l|therefore. This tax is figured at 30$ of the last-named sum, and this 30% is withheld from your total income received in this country. Happily, not all of this 30% will accrue to the U.S. Government, for when you depart^ you will be able to claim a considerable refund. Nevertheless, of the $8000 grant, #1320 will be withheld. I should judge that at least half of this sum will be returned to you upon your departure, although of this I cannot be sure. In any event, you will receive the following income: $3600 tax exemption _11_0 00 atfrtaevrel w igtrhaontld ing taxes 17680 Total Plus whatever return you are able to secure from the Internal Revenue Office at your departure. This is a little involved, but please be assured that I have done everything humanly possible to guarantee you the utmost income next year. In order to retain even this much, I have entered into negotiations with the . |
