Show 99 Claremont Avenue Hew York 27, H.Y. September 18, 1956 ' <?! \$r Dr. John II. hueller, Chairman Patten Foundation Committee Indiana University Bloomington - Indiana Dear Dr* Luellers On my arrival here after a few weeks-,1 wanderings during the recess between my tenure of the Mediaeval academy Chair at hichigan and the Luce Professorship at Columbia and Union Theological Seminarv, I have found your gracious letter of September 10 in waiting at this new address. I am afraid I have been a wandering scholar in recent years. My consultantship with the Library of Congress dates back to 1951 after conducting the Mt* Sinai Expedition, hence that aduress is indeed antiquated. It Is most kind of you and your eminent colleagues to think of me as a prospective occupant of the Patton Visiting Professorship at Indiana. This honor, heightened by our enduring affection and esteem for Indiana University, compels e^ory serious consideration for the offer. 's rsy present visit to sserica expires in the sunder of 1957, and owing to the existence of a number of obligations in the current acadeiaic year, I iiavc given long thought to the natter in the ;ope shat wc can reach satisfactory solution. In these special circumstances, there seems to be a series of three alternatives on iMoh I shoulu lihe to have your thoughts* First. I can spend three or four days per week throughout the Spring of '1957 on your Campus* This will give me ample time to give the six public lectures, c n duct the Seiainar, and participate in the university life, without impairing already existing limited obligations. ZQ I understand rightly that t x offer stimulates sseaking outside Indiana's: sec nd3s7* if you consider this arr njesie. t m satisfactory, I can without any difficulty deliver the course of six lectures at fortnightly intervals in the next Spring. Thirdly, it may be oossihle for nc to return specially fron hgypt for this purpose wit .in the*next two years, all being well, say in the course of 1S5S. The first alternative, if acceptable to Indiana, appears to be considerably less onerous than the third as it will imply no transportation from Egypt and the revenue imposition will be minimised by my status of resident alien at present* fhe second propostion is only a compromise and it will be helpful to know the net value of the honorarium in this case. I suggest as lecture subject the "Relations between the East and the Vesti Chapters in toe history f Crusade, Commerce ana Culture". It is a vast area of topical interest where I can formulate some of ssy own original work. S'he Seminar will be either a sore detailed discussion of the sase subject or perhaps "Hear Eastern history and Culture11. I shall look forward to laving your re-actios.s to all these possibilities, and again thank you* Cordially, ;'*2i3 - * tiya / |
