Show Men's Debate Opening a most successful debate season, the University of Utah contingent at the Rocky Mountain Forensic League's tournament, held at Boulder, Colorado, received outstanding commendation from the coaches in the various fields represented. Utah's contestants in the men's division were debaters Calvin Rampton and Alton Jenkins, orator Milton Newman, and extempore speaker Mike Masaoka. Highlighting the year's forensic curriculum was the annual Western States Speech Tournament held at Pasadena, California, and including a roster of two hundred participants from twenty-two western states. Utah's reputation was upheld by Mike Masaoka and David King, semi-finalists in the grand championship run-offs and sharers of first place honors in division "A" of the tournament, Geoffrey Circuit and Norman Tanner, who achieved the runner-up ranking in division "B", and Alton Jenkins and Quentin Alston, who tied for top position in division "C". The Utah representation, coached by Prof. C. La-verne Bane, won the squad championship for all-round excellency. The second annual tri-college legislature, managed by the U. of U. debate department, culminated the school year's forensic activities. )3 |
