Show gypsum consumption is relied on import, market potential of wet limestone FGD can be expected. However, since TPC will increasingly set up this system, yield of gypsum will exceed demand in the country, therefore, to promote extending of gypsum application and to simplify this system will be trends of future research and developement. The other method, magnesium hydroxide process is recently developed by simplifying magnesium oxide process, wherein, solubility of its product, magnesium sulfate, is high, so, its circulating slurry is almost in solution form which can be treated and discharged into sea so that installation cost of FGD can be thus cut down; however, high cost of its absorbent render it being preferably useful in middle and small plants. As to the state of art in the country, there is considerable fundation on reaction kinetics study in laboratory. Further pilot scale study has formally promoted in Energy and Resource Laboratories, Industrial Technology Research Institute ( ERUITRI ), by establishing first O.1MWe wet FGD experimental system in the country and planning on extending it to be a demonstration plant, thereby, intend to accomplish the establishment of domestic FGD technology. ERUITRI recognizes the importance of flue gas desulfurization technology to the country, and intends to develop this technique in a period of three years. In the first year, we have finished the design work and setup of O.1MWe wet FGD experimental system, and ascertained its compliance with design requirement of pilot test. In the second year, experiments were the major works, by using, separately, CaC03 and Mg(OH>2 as absorbent, to obtain relationship among various parameters and dependent variables so as to reach optimized system operation, and thereby establish reliability of the system and data required for scaling up, which form the base of application demonstration of large scale wet FGD system. In the third year, major works comprise planning and designing for large scale wet FGD as well as the study on the additives and inhibitors tests. Optimum operation conditions are expected to be available as bases of providing industries design, planning and optimum operation for setup of FGD system, as well as providing technical information service for industries II. STATUS IN USES AND MARKET POTENTIAL OF FGD IN TAIWAN [3-6]' In recent years, owing to elevation of public pursuance of environmental protection and government's stricte radication, the industry has begun to emphasize environmental ·protection. Acid rain and other kind of hazards resulted from discharging of SOx has also been recognized by the world, and: as early as in 1975, FGD systems had been extensively used to reduce discharge of SOx. In this country, under strict regulation of clean an acts, installation of FGD system is going to take off( Table 3 ). To our understanding, it could be described as follows: 1.
