Show .,,I , I ( . l . LEANY FAMILY HISTORY AS WRITTEN FROM :MBJ.!ORY BY WILLIAM LEANY • . ' ( I; William Leany, now begin to write from memory this 1st day ot January 1888 as my termer record _was destroyed by a terrible whirlwind tllat eame into my board shanty in the town called Harrisburg in Washington County in the Territory ot Utah in the year of 1865. I had moved there trom Parowan in the County ot Iron in the same territory, where the climate was warm enough to raise cotton, tobacco and sugar cane. Now I will write some ot the most noted incidents of m::, lite and also ot my father's family as it 9,ay be ot interest to my children in days to come when I have long since been gathered home to rest from earthly labors and received the reward ot a long and well spent lite. I will begin with my grandfather 1ohn Leany, who was born in Ireland, ot his place of birth I have not been infoi, ned and while yet a yowig man_ he married Margaret Means• and shortly after they ceme to the United States and w1 th them came my great Crandfather. I don't know what his christian name was but they all settled in Pennsylvania previous to the old French War which took place in the year ot,1758. My grandfather served one year under General Braddock and under General Washington in the United States army and was at what is known as Braddoc's Defeat, and when the American Revolution broke he volunteered and served three years under General Washington. · After this his tather was drafted to serve in the war, and he being too old my Crandtather took the· place ot his father and served again another three years and was with Colonel Dan Morgon at the Battle o:f' Cow Pens in the State ot ·South Carolina and ~as also with General Nathanil! H. Green at the Battle o:f' Clifford Court House in the same state shortl1 attar. He was also with Vlashington at the surrender ot Lord Cornwallace at New York Town ot Virginia, or, a.s the soldiers called it. |
