He was so utterly di r ty and unkempt, t his dusky child who was t o become a member of their household, that Mother Andrus sickened at t he t hought of having to cl ean him up that first time. Sister•s Seeing how. she felt, her/daughter Laura,(familiarly known l ater as ''Tid" :Macdonal d ) , told her not t o worry, she woul d take care of him. 'l'hen with her soap, towels and tub, this young girl disappear ed into the corn patch a few yards f r cm the house, returning f or a pail of warm water and the wailing child. It required two or three r e t urns to t he house for more warm water before s he was s ati sfi ed with her job , but how diffe r ent he looked , when she: f i nally brought him back to the r anch house, scrubbed to the point of shining and declrnd out in some of one of the msall boy's clo thing . It was weeks befor e t he litt le fel low ceased moaning f or his ovm people, and he grew almost ill before he would a ccept food and make fri ends. Blil.t. when he once yi el ded, they got EJlong nicely. He gr ew up to be an excellent help at t he r anch and was a gr own young man when his relatives co axed him to r eturn to their circle . Seeing he wanted to go, Captain Andrus gave. him an excellent horse and saddle and.. r el eas ed him with kindness and the beat of f eelings. , Still clear in the memory of W1anomas Andrus are such items as t heir f amily acquaintance with J'ohn D. Lee when they were living in Big Cottonwood, |
