On October 26 Joan was interviewed on this program by!,fr Earl Stevens regarding a blasphemous, poxnographic film about Jesus Christ which a DanisP, . .. film producer is trying to make in the United States. However" the following, · in essence, gives the main gist of the interView: . # # # # # # After introducing Joan to the radio audience, Nr Stevens invited her to shat:'e her concern about the contemplated production in this country of a film entitled THE . f'iANY F1WES OF JESUS. , Joan: , I'm very concernedbeeause I have been aaware of the -. possibility of this film being . . made during ,the past several years. A man by the name of Thorsen, a .Danish film producer, has been trying· to make it in several other countries and he has been turned . down, ' and the reason he has been turned down is that this is going to be, he claims, the world's pornographic\ movie of all pornographic movies - that is, he is p~anning to show Our Lord Jesus Chris\t' as someone who is a drunkard, a. fornicator and a homosexual. In lurid detail and glo~ious technicolor, I presume. He has been turned down in Denmark, Sweden, France, Italy, Great Britain and, interestingly enough, in Isreal. The Jews res- ·pect Jesus as a prophet; also they feel that it is a matter of· policy to prohibit a blasphemous, pornographic film to be made of any ~Teat religious leader. For this reason, I feel that everybody should get behind this and try to prevent ihis movie being made in this country. I think it would be a blot on the name of the United Sta~es if such .a revolting movie were made about the Lord Jesus Christ here. This ·is rather a different type of censorship from most, I think, because, although we must . allow freedom of the press, and so on, when it comes to a definitely blasphemous, revolting . and utterly untrue story or movie about such a' great figure as the Lord Jesus Christ, then I think we have to draw the line. And I want to call on everyone, Christian and non- . Christian, to protest this, because of the nature of the film and because it could se~ a ----precedent that would be very difficult to change. . . I followed the adventures of this Nr Jens Jorgen Thorsen.for some time because I ',subscribe to an English church newspaper ••••• Stevens : 'He is the one who is tryiug to make the movie?' Joan ': He is the one who is trying to make the movie, that's correct. In this English . church paper they gf!Ne all the details about his attempt to ' make the movie in England and·how it was defeated by public protest. So now, apparently, this man - and he must be a very sick man I should think ' - has received financial support from a Danish . multi-millionaire, acco:i:'ding to this news item I have, which is quoting the August 24th issue of VARIETY magazine, which covers all aspects ,of · show business. I would assume that what VARIETY says about it is probably pretty accurate. And they want the production, I suppose the business end of it, to be set up in some small European country, and - now this is the essential thing - filming will be on an eleven-week shooting schedule in the United States within the next 12 months!. And they're also trying to bring out a hardback book ' based on ihis film fOT the Christmas season! So I really think that every concerned person should be involve~ in trying to do something about this, by getting together with your own church leaders I in your own wards ~ parishes, and petitioning our representa ti ves ir.: ' Congress to prevent this film being made here. Write ·to the Presiden~ - be claims to be a dedicated Christian - write to him by all means. And I would ask people to write to friends in other states and alert them to what is happening • . This is all on the grounds that an ounce of prevention is .worth a pound of cure! . And I would ask people to write · the GoVernors ...aruL-other officials of. thGlir States. For my' part, if I heard that a :film ~this-nature were goi~ to be made about, say, the Buddha, for exampl~~ I certainly . ........... would be up in arms,· and I would· join ldth pr<ll>testors to prevent such a ·i'evolting film being made about him, or any other founder 'of one of the worldJs grea~J religions. |
