They asked to 8 rr 8 n~e 8ccomoaniments And to m8ke recordings to send to Father. Ille also had a del i ,·,htful weekFmd IJJi th e::'l s t ern friends of Ruth Stou ghton. A younglookino mother and f ive teen agers, complete with bedrolls, arrived about 9::30 p.m. after a viol pnt r a ins torm and without benefit of guide. They jus t asked Navajos alonn the WAy. TheV telephoned fr om Color a do to S8Y they w~ uld bring a complete oicnic meal for everybody, and if Ide coul ri give them any kind of space to lay bedrolls dObJn they would love to Sto3y to Itlor s hip with us Sunday morning. By 10: 30 lile were all fini s hinll a delicious dinner and f elt like old friends. The next t lJJO days they provided all the me als, washed the dishes, visited four or five r ather di s t E'nt f amilies - lJJhere they made happy contacts ulith people, watched expert weaving on a be autiful souaw belt while the weaver chatted about her last ye ;::Jr's college cours es in educ ation, s alJJ wat er jups, medicine baskets, juniper be ads, turquoise and s ilver, Na v ~j o blankets, watched Navajo fried bread in the making and en joyed e ating it. They s aw some well constructed hogAns and talked with the builder. Th ey saw strange and lovely desert Bcenery from little known ro a ds . The climax was a j nyous Sund ay service at St-Mary-of-the-Moonli ght, with about 40 present, and thE vi s itors doing well I ~i th the Navajo-l anguage hymn and St Is aac Jooues Mass mUSic, and so they left f or Page and Grand Canyon, le aving us honing that they would return, And with a promise to try to send us ltlringer washing machines to ense the problem of clean school clothes in the desert. It i s believed she may h3ve lived 3 or 4 days, while family and friends sought her in vain. She WnS not found for three weeks. Father Liebler was asked to conduct the burial service at the graveside. Afterwards, we were invited to a meal Itlith the f amily and were able to share more intimately in t heir qrief and to speak words of h~pe and comfort appropriate after t he ohysical death of a baptized, Christi an child. tvlay she nO ld be r p.joicin [l in her new , eternal life in heaven. Kelsey's tremendous t alks on the art of Chris tian meditation - especi 211y me a nin gful afte r re ading his book on the s ubject,THE OTHER SIDE OF SILENCE. Then there was the trip to Mi ami and the love and kindness of Father's f amily and friends, which I sh all nev8T forget. Miami, and frequent assists from Providence enabled me to ch auf f eur Father to medical appointment s , social engaqef11.ents and a little sightseeing - the Sea~uarium and the Parrot Junqle were much enjoyed. And we returned to Hat Rock in time for me to k eep a long-standing "date" with Brother Juniper -- we went to the first retreat Father Kelsey has conduct ed in Utah - at Camp Tuttle, the diocesan summer camp in the mount ains near Salt Lake City. It was a beautiful week of learning, praying, s haring and fellow s hip. And it was a great joy for all of us th at Bishop Charles and his lovely wife, Elvira, were able to be with us for a greater part of the week. And the Lord gave me, personally, a very special joy this year ••• Father John Davis, pastor of St MiChael and All Angels in Corona del Mar, California, graciously invited me to conduct a Quiet Day for his parish in March, and alsn to speak at two |
