Show 3 the stolen windows, door hinges and other important items, but had put in some spare time in building three or four pews (the congregat ion usually sits on blankets on the f loor) and erect ed a cross on the wall over where the altar stands! Little things like these are genuine encouragements, and make us feel that a response of gratitude is really possible. lolNE OF THE commonest questions posed by visitors is : "How many Indians do you have here?" Of course the answer has to be-well, it depends on what you mean -Qy , .... ~~ "here". Ther e is no census of the Utah strip of the Re:3ervation, because the Tribal land is divided into Districts whose boundaries ignore State lines. It interested us to hear that Catherine Pickett has on her medical files in the clinic more than 5,000 names of people who have been treated in one way or another . Of course, there must be a lot of people who haven't been treated, ever, and of course the population is growing, rapidly. A pr ize is due, in this connection, to one of our old-time schoolboys. Slim John, who came as an adolescent to our school back in the days when the old CCC shack did service for a school house, is now a staid married man with no less than eight children. (No twins, either!) It is seldom that we don't have one or more of his offspring in our sch0 ~1. When his 8th child was born he blew ~11 the staff and the school children to pop and candy, and made arrangements for Baptism on the 7th day. The baby now wears the medal depicting our Saviour, and the cap, jacket and booties sent us by good f riends for j ust such an occasion. White folks seem to find it hard to believe that Navahos love their children, want them, and want more of them. When we wr ote about Barbara and her eighteen chil- , we had several letters asking about possible adoption, the assumption being that nobody could want to keep all those infants! Some even suggested t hat we start teaching what is euphemistically called "planned par enthood." No need of it. Navahos plan parenthood and lots of it ! Because we are a Mission to the Navahos, we are sometimes asked if we allow whites to come to church. It may interest , |
