This increases the expense of maintenance, a3 the headings and other structures on eaah Separate canal must bo maintained, and alao increases the-diffioulty and expense of operation. Diversions:- Another, difficulty that the mainteranee force has to aontendwith Is that most of the streams forming the source of irrigable supply debouch from their canyons over aa alluvial cons or fan. During hi^a water thoy occupy several channels, no one of whioh is large enough to aarry the flood flow. Tho canal of course diverts from only one of these channels, and with the usual perversity of things Inanimate, the river, after the flood recedes, persists in following the wrong channel, or insists on flowing on the oppoaita sido of ths channel from the head-gate. This always occurs at the hei;-*ht of tha irri^-tion season, resulting In a loss of water tc the irrigator, and much strenuous work on the part of the naintoaanoe crew in foroing the river back to the proper channel. Structures:- It is cm accepted faot that while it "is -jwssrhapS technically possible to design a structure that would rass all floods, the oost would be pro- |
