The soil in many places contains a great deal of alkali and is very soluble.Thi3 iakes it necessary to apply the water very carefully to prevent errosion. In many places where the r?ater has gotten away from the farmer or has broken a ditch bank the land has been -washed into deep gullies and very considerably damaged thereby, In other places the velocities in the ditches has been exce3aive,a_c± resulting in serious errosion below the designed grade of the ditch. props.
