Sir: You are hereby notified that the Secretary of the Interior has granted permission for the Florence Mining Company to enter upon the Uinta reservation north of the Strawberry River and to negotiate with the Uintah and White River Utes, occupying said reservation, for a lease for mining purposes. You will afford said company all reasonable facilities in conducting the proposed negotiations. I enclose herewith a copy of notice this day sent to said mining company. Very respectfully, W. A. Jones 0. W. M(B) Commissioner. I received these letters Oct, 23, and I immediately called, the Indians together, and told them that some white men had authority to treat with them for a mineral lease, and told them that some v/hite men would come soon, and talk to them about it. I did not know when they would come, or who they would be, but that I wanted them to think about it so that they would know what they wanted to say when the white men didc come, they would know what to Bay to them. About two weeks after that I received orders by wire from the Hon. Commissioner of India n Affairs to meet the representat-atives of the Florence Mining Company in Denver. |
