Show three bands representing us here today have heard you state the purpose of your coming here. I hope that in the future we willAhave tho same right to share equally. I am In favor of it. As I understand it concerns any recoveries of suits now pending. I feel since we have cote to an agreement it will work to an advantage. One of our main leaders is absent and I do not know what his opinion will be on this matter." Fred Mart: "This discussion conoerns money derived from land sales in Colorado and claims now pending." Surry: "I wanted to tell thorn the same things that'Fred has expressed. But sometimee when I want to make the explanations I am eritized by my own people on talking too much. I would like to point out to you the advantage you Southern Utes have over us Uncompahgre and Whiteriver Indians. You Southern Utes have your own Agency at Ignaeio and tho Toyacks have their own agency, and we up here do not have our own Agency. I am willing that we share alike and I would like to point out to you that we don't derive any benefits from your three agencies or country surrounding them. But at the same time we are willing to help you. We really own part of that country but we do not receive anything from it. Now, I would like to come back to the resolution that I presented to you at my last visit dealing with the land purchase. At the present time we are trying to get a piece of land that is a piece of the old Uncompahgre Reservation. We are using $200,000 of tribal funds and $200,000 of Government appropriated money to buy out the homesteaders of the Hlllcreek district. We asked for 750,000 acres surrounding that country. We were going to use $100,000 of the oil shale money to pay back what we borrowed from the Government. But due to the fact that you Indiana have not paid your share of attorney fees, it has held us back. You think that you Indians are treated badly. You have nothing compared to what we have. We have not any reservation, and our sharing with the Uintahs has nothing to do with you people. Personally, I am willing to share with all alike. Alto there are other matters that deals with the Uintahs and perhaps they would like to express their opinions. After all we have to li^e with them and I would like to see us all work together and work for the same interests." Lawrence Appah: fUintah) "As I understand from your discussions concerning this matter, the final decisions will have to come from Washington." Curry: "I want to express to you Southern Utes that you are fortunate in receiving land without paying for it like we have to do. The land you received the Government gaffe to you, but the land that we are trying to secure, we will have to pay for. Julius Cloud: "We did not know we had caused the oil shale money to be tied up." |
