Show "There ia an old agreement that states that Uintahs can share with you for 20 years and that is void now." Oran: "I would like to correct Mr. Buck before he goes on further. Before the 1849 treaty we were classified as Confederated Band of Ute Indians and the Uintah s were included in this. And they still have the asms interests. I don't know why the treaty of 1880 stands. When I was in Washington the lawyers that were studying these treaties told me that they had this interest, but they did not know how they got the interest. Ever since Chief Ouray was at the head of this tribe, and the other leaders of a hundred years, they always shared and had the same interests. Tho only things I know is the knowledge I acquired through books and studying and talking and listening to my lawyer friends* I know eaoh band has different ideas. After all, we are one tribe of Ute Indians, and we should look at it in that respect. You should not feel separated because you are in a different place than we are, and I don't think that we should make distinctions on that account. Now Tony can go ahead if he so desires." Craves Cent; "Our purpose in making this visit ia to discuss tha distribution of funds. I hope while we are here we will be able to make an official statement regarding the equal distribution of funds according to population. The discussion rests with you people to decide as to what you think is right." Isaac Cloud: "I personnaBy feel that excluding some of the Indians is not fair. I want to ask in behalf of my Indians at home for an equal distribution of funds according to the population. After all we are under the new reorganization act and you are under it also; therefore, we should try to cooperate and work together." Tony Buck: "I did not state that the reason they came here was because of the trouble with the whites." Curry: "I just pointed out the reason why we all came here." Julius:Cloud: "There are two subjects that we expect out Chairman to present at this meeting, lhey are as follows: I 1. The distribution of funds according to population. 1 \ 2. The proper amount to pay an attorney for services rendered. We wrote to the Indian Offioe for information on paying attorneys for services rendered on claims, etc. As yet we have not received any information concerning this in reference to the contract. The fact that we are under the new reorganization act, we must unit and cooperate and not exolude any one band of Indians. We must work together in order to make us a strongetoto meet the problems that confront us y> |
