Even old Red Cap himself called and told the Superintendent that he had decided to support him and aid in the suppression of gambling and drinking. We are advised that the Indians s t i l l gamble in publio, but that only about 50 per cent of the number now attend the gambling fests that formerly attended them, and that the leaders of the people are doing everything in their power, and that their efforts will undoubtedly prove successf u l. In conclusion we desire to s t a t e that we have no fear but that we can control the situation hefce. Those people may be lead, but they oannot be driven towards better things. I f the Office will support U'B^in the stand which we have taken in t h i s matter, we believe that we oan stop, not only the drinking and gambling, but ultimately the larger part of the danoing as well. However, we t r u s t that the Indian Office will not make the mistake of attempting to stippress immediately, and ruthlessly everything that i t might judge - 5 - |
