They were particularly enthusiastic upon the proposition of handling this matter ourselves, without recourse to the authorities. The matter of cooperation seemed to appeal to them very muoh. i The Superintnndent advised them further that, if they would voluntarily oonsent to suppress these two evils, and, not only consent to suppress them, but take steps, such as might be necessary actually to suppress them, he would do all in his power to prevent the Indian Office from making any attempt to interfere with their Sun Dance; and that the only thing he would require concerning the Sun Danoe would be, thatit be postponed until after the haying season was over; in other v/ords, he told them that he would like to affect a trade with them: they voluntarily to discontinue gambling and drinking, and take into their own hands the suppression of these two evils, the Super intnn rlent to agree to use his influence in favor of the Sun Dance, stipulating only that this dance be observed after the haying season and when the crops would not be demanding their attention. - 4 - |
