Show enomenon is found for all languages that are 3.1 known* and it is obligatory* Even though Takic displays the phenomenon about as strongly as any Uto-Aztecan branch, it is interesting that PUA *puku appears not to have any reflex in Takic* Even though the sound correspondences are not right, the words for "pet" and the words for "eagle" look suspiciously similar* Tubatulabal is both a single language and an independent branch of Uto-Aztecan. It is located near Bakersfieldg near the Takic languages, but in immediate contact with languages of the Numic branch* It appears that the "pet" phenomenon may be present in the weaker form* but the evidence is scanty* In his grammar, Voegelin gives some examples of animals directly possessed (see l^ndout), but in his texts, there are examples of purjgu (from PUA *pu(n}ku)8 which, context tells us is for "goats" in one case, "horse" in another. If context does not indicate otherwise, the possessed form of pungu- is used for "dog"°, there is also another word^ used unambiguously for "dog" that is related to purjgu* The Numic branch of Uto-Aztecan consists of three sub-branches that stretch out8 £&sac± fan-like, from the southwestern corner of the Great Basin, xmk out over an immense area to the north and east, covering the entire Great Basin, and beyondo A useful geographic division, which has no linguistic or genetic basis, is into the inner Numic languages, found closest to the apex of the fan in the southwestern Basin, and the outer Numic languages, in the north and east* In total, there are some six or eight languages* %e outer languages, covering the largest territory of any Uto-Aztecan languages {except perhaps for Aztec), display considerable dialect variation. I have time only to summarize the Numic situation (but more derails are given in the handout). All of the outer languages display the "pet" phenomenon in at least its weaker form* Information on the inner languages is scanty\ since they are closer to the Takic languages, they might be expected to display the phenomenon in a stronger form* ri'he reflex |
