Show A Brief History of the Southern Utes 1853 1851- 1853- Threats to Moache domain in Mexican settlements on Conejos Siver. 1355 First major army campaign against Moaches in northern N. M.- Battle at Cochetopa Pass resulted in defeat of Indians who sued for peach. 1855 Treaty concluded by Capotes ( early summer) and Moaches ( August) with N. M. 1856 Moache chief Cany Attle claims San Luis Valley. 1357 Cany Attle claims Conejos Valley. 1857 1356& 57- Officials recommend the Capotes & Jicarillas be moved to the San Juan and be assisted in becoming self- supporting. 1358 Tobawaches now considered a band of Abiquiu agency. 1858 Tobawaches considered largest band of Utes. 1858 1857- 58- Ute hostilities with Navajos. 1353 Utes refust to make peace, with Navajos. 1859 Temuche, a Capote chief, brings presents to Navajo camp ( Kiatano's) to maintain good relations i860 Capotes join U. S. troops in campaigns against Navajos. i860 1860- 61- Tebeguache Utes placed under Denver agency- Mohuaches moved from Taos to Maxwell's Ranch- Abiquiu agencjr handled Capotes- Tierra Amarilla handled Womenuches- Cimarron agency dealt with Mohuaches & Jicarillas. 1868 Southern Utes conclude treaty with U. S. creating Ute reservations. 1370 W& mffinaches trade with Cimarron ( Moache) Utes, and Navajos. 1870 WAmfenaches object to moving to a reservation in Colorado. 1870 Moaches disturbed by sale of Maxwell grant. 1873 Moaches conclude treaty at Cimarron. I878 Capotes & Wiminaches cede right to 1868 reservation. |
