Though not ~ncluded in the resources of the Territory, it seems proper for me to say a word about this _much abused, very depraved and poorly understood people. Within the Territorial limits, there are several thousand indians, generally in small tribes, and very much scattered. They are generally peaceable, nnd when difficulty occurs with them, whisky is usually the fighting man. Efforts are being made by the Government, to give all the rising generation a knowledge of the rudamental , l,ranches of science. Some of the efforts have proved successful. . \.11 the tribes in the Territor.y, with few ex,ceptions, have been t t·eated with, and they are being located on small reservations, i o order more effectually to control and discipline them. Those 1 iving on the salt water, are, as a rule, less ingenious and perhaps less intelligent, than those resident in the highlands of the interior, arising perhaps, from their piscatory and idle habits. Jrish being so abundant and easily caught, most of the tribes make them their principal food, and wax fat in idleness. OccaHionally a man is killed by t}lem, but none to my knowledge since the war of '55-6, without first, being made drunk, and the victim is generally be who gave them the liquid fire. With a proper effort on the part of benevolent and philanthropic citizens, the children who are now growing up, might be enlightened, and a few of the "lost raee" carried down to a respectable future. Great is the field and greater will be the reward to the successful. l'tESOURCES AND CLAIMS TO EMIGRATION. 25 CHAPTER XIX. TABULAR STATEMENTS, COUNTIES OF WASHINGTON TERRITORY. CouNTY. CoUNTY SliiAT.
