Show II4 At last the ball bell"an to draw to a close. One of the white-haired patnarchs tacitly admitted that the day had gone by when he could have hoed all day and danced all night-he withdrew with his bevy of young wives. Others shuffled through the reels and quadrilles with bent forms and leaden feet. I shook off my fears and began t o anticipate the joy of the quiet walk home with Lucy. The last dance was to be mine. I impatiently awaited the end of the quadrille for which Chilcott had captured her. At last the jigging violins stopped. Chilcott drew the girl's reluctant hand under his arm and led her towards her aunt, whispering compliments into her unwilling ear. I hastened to meet them. But another was near. Brigham thrust forward before Chilcott, genially patted him on the shoulder, and took Lucy from his arm with suave mastery. They reached Mrs. Sen by as I came up behind them. Brigham bowed in bis sprightliest manner. "Sister Senby," he said, " I think it's high time this charming child was tucked into her trundle-bed. She can't hide her tiredness any longer. I 'm going to take her home in my carriage." " Excuse me, Brother Brigham," I interposed. "This is my dance with Miss Neville. I will see her home." "Oh, yes, I-- You are most kind, Brother Young, but you need not bother," murmured Lucy. "You're going home in my carriage-now," stated Brigham. " You're almost used up. Where's Sen by? " He gave me a crafty glance. " You'll have no trouble gitting another partner, Dave. Plenty of girls']] t ake you. Try 'em.' I smiled at the JOke. And when the ladies came out with their wraps I carefully escorted Mrs. Sen by to the street, although her hnsband joined us before we reached the door. It was doubly galling to see Brigham hand Lucy into his elegant carriage and THE MORMON LION IIS complacently seat himself beside her. But when Mr. and Mrs. Sen by stepped in after him I was relieved of the deadly fear that had gripped me. Fortunately the night was too cold for a moonlight drive. Brigham returned before the end of the last reel. I was dancing it with Cora. If her husband saw us, he paid no heed. He was devoting himself to a little sloe-ryed French girl, who was younger even than Ann Jane. |
