The Committee will meet on Tuesday the 12th mstant, at 8 o'clock, P. M., in the Select Council Chamber. Very respectfully, your obedient servant, VV. 11. KtATINO, Secretary pro. tem. G. PniLADELJ'mA, Sixth month 12th 1838. To ll 'illittm ll. Keating, Sem·et:u·y pt-o tern. of the Police Committee: 1 Re,specl~d Prierul:-'l:hy la~t coml"~lllnication, inviting us to furnish to the Com~mttee ~f Counctls, th1s cvenmg, any information which we may poss.ess Ill relatiOn to the destruction of the Pennsylvan ia Hall , has been rece1v~d. In our letter of the 5th instant, we slated our intention to make a pubhc statement of that disgraceful outrage. Time hae not permitted us to prepare such a d.ocument, and we ma.y doubt whether the period ha~ yet arnve~ when the h1story of the short existence and destruction of the Pen nsylv~ ma Hall , would be dispassionately read and coolly decided upon. Of the tm~e and manner of making such publication, we request to be perm it· ted to judge hereafter, according to existing circumstances. In respect to the call for information in re lation to the investigation of the cond~ct of the ~ayor of the city on that occasion, we have on ly to repeat !~e vte1~s contam_cd in the letter of Samuel ·webb, dated the 7th instant. 1 o furntsh such Information would involve the necessity, in justice to that officer, of s~bstanti.ating it by witnesses, and thus we should eventually as~ sume the office of uiformers and of prosecutors. This oflice we have not sought, nor do we wish to be drawn into its exercise. Ou.r positi~Hl is simply this:. we erected a Hall for lawful objects, and used 1.t onlY. ~n the exerctse of nghts guarantied by the Constitution to all ~mencan cttlzc.ns. \Ve built it under the protection of the law, and trusted Jt to the r.rotectlon of the law-in the heart of the city- and when we h3d been assade~ by la.wless fore~, and were threatened with its repetition, we surrend~rcd 1t at ~~s rcqu~st 1nto the custody of the Chief Executive officer of the c1ty of Pl11ladelplua. It was not protected, and it perished from the assaults. of the mob and the torch of the incendiary. \Vhether the Mayor of the cJty had the means under his control to protect the property, and did not exert them, or was not furnished with adequate resou rces for that object, we conceive can be readily and better ascertained from other sources than ourselves. Respectfully thine, &c. . (S igned,) DANIEL NEALL, Prestdent 'if tltc Board 'if bfanagers 'if the Pennsylvania Ilall, To John Sovijt, Mayor: H. Esteemed Friend :-The Managers of the Pennsylvania Hall are about to comrnence the dedication of their Hall to-day. \Vc had engaged Samuel Barry and <?ershom Craft, (two of the silent watch,) to act as door-keepers. We have tlus moment heard that all the silent watchmen had b~en ordered by thee t~ r?pair to the State House at 4 o'clock.• ' Ve would respectfu lly ask permt.sswn fo.r these tw~ m~n to remain at the Hall , to keep the boys from maktng a noJHC by runmng 111 and out of the Hall during the exercises.
