Show To the memory of Elena Alexandrovna Grigoryeva FOREWORD Observations made between 1933 and 1941 at an experimental station of the Kirov Railway, Murmansk, have been taken as the basis of this work. The purpose of these observations was to investigate the conditions causing snowslides and to explain the variation in slides due to the nature of their movements, the form of snow deposition, and the snow action on obstacles. It was not the task of the writer to generalize the experience gained in this particular branch of science. He has used only those observations made at the experiment station which can further the development of knowledge regarding the nature of snow and snowslides. No bibliography is given. Many data were lost during the war, and only those data preserved in manuscript have been used. Accordingly, the data used in this work concerns slides occurring during the winter of 1940- 41, the physical and mechanical properties of snow, the slope gradients at slide sites, and the slide friction angles. E. A. Grigoryeva and B. F. Matushevski, staff members of the experiment station, were those most concerned in making the necessary observations. Senior engineer- hydrometeorologist A. B. Byanki was permanent consultant. The writer is grateful for all the friendly assistance on the part of these individuals and hereby expresses his sincere appreciation. |
