He says he arrived at the vision of a live and organic landscape through surrealism, at least insofar as his vision appears in his poetry. But below its articulation, before its annunciation in words, the vision comes from living among the rocks and allowing them to speak. We can' t be talking to each other; we must be silent if we wish to hear the silent voice of the mountains. What is one to do with a man who insists that the rocks are alive, who insists on saying against all common sense that There are families of stones under the ground. As the young stones grow they rise slowly like moons. When they reach the surface they are old and holy and when they break open they give off a rich odor, each blooming once in the light after centuries of waiting. - "Desert," Chosen Places You cannot begin to analyze these ideas in western scientific terms, because they do not translate.
