Such a state of mind, then, is a powerful source for human action, and should be recognized as such. For those who accept it, it represents a commerce between the human mind and the Mind of the Universe. THE LIGHT OF THE MOUNTAIN After climbing Rainier, he said, . . . one feels far from home so high in the sky, so much so that one is inclined to guess, that apart from the acquisition of knowledge and the exhilaration of climbing, more pleasure is to be found at the foot of mountains than on their frozen tops. Doubly happy, however, is the man to whom lofty mountain tops are within reach, for the lights that shine there illumine all that lies below. When he emerged from the "terrible shadow" of the North Face of Ritter, into the "blessed light," his awakened consciousness expanded into the landscape which surrounded the summit. Sixteen years later he asked himself in his journal why light seemed so much brighter on the top of a mountain after a difficult climb. His answer supports the idea that the awakening on places like the North Face of Ritter gave him added powers which remained. In climbing where the danger is great, all attention has to be given to the ground step by step, leaving nothing |
