Show 49 "Don't be silly," Karen said. "What did it say when they asked it about Michael and Vicky?" Eileen asked. "I couldn't see." "It said no," someone told her. Lorin couldn't see who it was. "I'll bet it's wrong," Eileen said. There was a movement at the door. Lorin looked up and saw Dale and Elizabeth come in. This required some reshuffling among the people who stood closest to the wall. He stepped sideways to make room. Judy slipped in front of him. "Can you see?" she asked. He nodded. "Naughty, naughty," Dale said when he saw what was on Karen's and Dave's laps. "Shh," someone said. Lorin looked down to make sure he would not be stepping on anyone's feet and then moved closer to the filing cabinet. He hadn't wanted to say so, but Judy's head did block his view of the board a little. He had missed the last question but he saw Karen's and Dave's fingernails go pink as they lifted the pressure slightly on the triangular plastic indicator, and he felt his scalp creep as he saw it start to move under their hands. He had never seen a board up close before, and he found the pictures of the sun and moon faintly repellant, like something you found on crumpled leaflets in the Greyhound depot late at night during the summer. The message indicator had a plastic window and three legs, tipped with felt, and it made a hrushing sound as it slid across the surface of the board. Everyone was very quiet. It slid to "No," and someone laughed. "All it ever says is no," Bonnie said. "So we've got a negative board," Dave said. |
