Charles Bonner and his friends are going to play poker while they wait for the election returns. Mayo said he heard it from Mary Margaret, who has to work late tonight to serve the food." "Well, what's so awful about that?" Maggie Rose asked, puzzled. "Don't you see?" Hugo threw down his fork. "Mayo knew I'd be honor bound, as chief of police, to raid a gambling party, no matter whose house it's in. But my horse sense tells me it isn't Mayo who wants me to know about the gambling. It's Harry Ward. It's him who sent Mayo to me with the information." Maggie Rose shook her head, and Karl was equally puzzled. "Why would Harry Ward want you to raid the superintendent's mansion, Pop?" he asked. "I haven't pieced it all together myself," Hugo replied slowly. "Eat your supper, Karl. I started to get suspicious when I told the police officers at city hall that they'd have to go with me. Five minutes later, one of the men tripped and said he'd sprained his ankle, so he went home. Right after that, another officer told me he'd just got a message that his wife was took bad sick, and he left. The third officer said that since the voting polls had just closed, the lock-up was sure to start filling up with drunks. Some one would have to stay in the jail, he said, and he'd better do it.
