"We have a dollar thirty-five to buy Veronica's wedding present." Karl said, "We ought to be able to get something pretty nice for that. Got any ideas?" "Nope. Do you?" "She's your sister," Karl told Andy. "You ought to know what she'd like." Andy pushed the stacks of nickels into a straight line, like lead soldiers. "Veronica already has all kinds of stuff put away," he said. "She and Mama have been stitching towels and crocheting doilies for the past couple of months." "How about a pitcher and a wash basin?" Karl suggested. "She's got that. Maybe you should just take a walk down street and look in the store windows to see if you can find something." "Me? Why me?" "'Cause I won't have time to," Andy answered. "Tomorrow night after work I have to go over to the Sokol Hall and help clean it up. Friday night I have to help set up benches and chairs, and Saturday's the wedding." "We shouldn't have waited this long to buy a present," Karl muttered.
